Sainsbury's

Sainsbury’s is the UK’s third largest supermarket. They have a number of targets tackling sustainability and specifically tackling carbon emissions.

The two key ones are:

- A 25% reduction in carbon emissions per square metre by 2012 against a 2004 baseline
- A 5% reduction in electricity usage in our depots by 2008 and 12% by 2010 (against a baseline of 2005/06)

With these targets in mind, Sainsbury’s are embarking on a programme of initiatives to measure and then reduce their carbon footprint.  They are doing this together with dcarbon8 who are helping to develop the approach. Growing their business involves a significant amount of construction. Construction work for new stores, extensions, refurbishments and depots consumes energy and resources and generates waste. They are committed to ensuring the environmental impact of this is kept to a minimum. Overall, Sainsbury’s aim to reduce the carbon footprint of any construction work they undertake.
